Mtorrents ((INSTALL)) Download
There are several other ways to get Ubuntu including torrents, which can potentially mean a quicker download, our network installer for older systems and special configurations and links to our regional mirrors for our older (and newer) releases. If you don't specifically require any of these installers, we recommend using our standard downloads.
The network installer lets you install Ubuntu over a network. It includes the minimal set of packages needed to start and the rest of the packages are downloaded over the network. Since only current packages are downloaded, there is no need to upgrade packages immediately after installation.
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer download network that sometimes enables higher download speeds and more reliable downloads of large files. You need a BitTorrent client on your computer to enable this download method.
If you take the Ubuntu alternative download page for example, there, you have the possibility to download the OS also via torrent. Being a peer to peer where files are stored on anyone's machine got me wondering on just how safe would that be compared to downloading an OS image directly from the provider website? Be it for desktops or even for servers where the implications of a security breach in the OS would be huge.

So: if you trust the source of your .torrent file (which is always questionable for a plain HTTP connection, plus see the Mint incident with hacked site), the subsequent download is indeed the same as the source claims.
µTorrent is the world's most popular BitTorrent client. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 126.96.36.199 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange. µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources. Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. If your language isn't available, you can easily add your own, or edit other existing translations to improve them!
File Downloads Location and Performance: By Default, uTorrent Portable will download files to uTorrentPortable\Data\downloads and store torrents in uTorrentPortable\Data\torrents. To change this, enter the options and enter the path \ for the root directory of your portable device, \Documents for the documents directory on your device, \Documents\downloads for the X:\Documents\downloads directory, etc. Note that downloading files directly to a flash drive may slow down your other running portable apps. uTorrent does not support relative paths, so moving paths will require readjusting your download and torrent file locations manually.
Is there software for Ubuntu, which allowes me to download and share the OS update packages with torrent? I want to relieve the servers of Canonical, so I already set up an apt cache server. But it would be really great to use ubuntu nearly fully independent of foreign servers.
Saturating the "up" part of your Internet connection slows downloading because packets coming "down" have to be acknowledged by your computer and those acknowledgements have to go out via the up link. If your computer falls too far behind in acks because the up link is choked with data, the sender will slow down and start retransmitting the unacknowledged packets. This will appear to you as a decrease in download speed.
It will affect your download speeds, yes - especially since you are on DSL. If your network is maxing out it's outbound bandwidth with packets to peers (sharing), you won't have enough spare outbound bandwidth to ask for more pieces of the torrent you are receiving.

Project Reality can be installed with our official installer. To download the installer you can either use the official torrent, the PR Download Assistant Tool(Uses Torrent protocol as well) or one of the direct download HTTPS mirrors.
In order to download the Torrent file if you choose that option, you must have a BitTorrent client installed on your computer. We recommend using qBittorrent. It is highly recommended that you download all Project Reality modifications direct though the torrents to avoid corrupt downloads. But make sure this isn't blocked by your Internet Service Provider cause in that case you should use the direct download HTTPS mirrors.
